Retired, or What?
Retirement: the promised land of leisure, freedom, and endless relaxation. Or so we've been led to believe. For many, the mere thought of leaving the workforce invokes images of idyllic days spent pursuing hobbies, traveling the world, or simply basking in the tranquility of newfound time. Yet, the reality is far more nuanced. While some eagerly anticipate bidding farewell to the daily grind, others find themselves grappling with a sense of loss, purposelessness, and even isolation in their retirement years.
When MassMutual insurance surveyed 2,000 U.S. retirees and workers approaching retirement between late January and early February, 2024, 8% reported feeling less happy in retirement, about a third said they’re not more happy than they were before leaving the workforce. Almost half of those who don’t feel happier in retirement said that they feel lonely sometimes, and 33% said there was less romance or dating in their lives.
Respondents who said they're happier in retirement shared a few things in common. Sixty-one percent who reported feeling “much happier” said they paid off their debt at least five years before retiring. By comparison, among those who were not happier, only 48% said the same regarding debt. And nearly half of the much-happier crowd said they planned for retirement by taking steps to improve their health, while only 32% of those who aren’t happier said the same.
The much-happier retirees also fill their free time with activities: 76% said they spent time with loved ones, 70% made sure to exercise, 63% pursued hobbies, and 62% said they traveled.*
In the tapestry of life, retirement marks a significant transition, one that demands careful consideration and preparation. It's a time to redefine oneself, to forge new paths, and to discover meaning beyond the confines of a career. However, navigating this uncharted territory requires more than just financial planning or ticking off destinations on a bucket list. It necessitates a holistic approach—one that encompasses the mental, physical, intellectual, relational, and emotional dimensions of well-being.
